Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains to Redefine Long-Distance Rail Travel in India
The New Year ushers in a high-speed revolution for Indian Railways with the Vande Bharat sleeper trains achieving a peak speed of 180 km/h during trials. These advanced trains promise to offer world-class travel experiences, ensuring faster, safer, and more comfortable journeys for long-distance commuters.
Successful Trials Mark a New Milestone
The trials conducted in Rajasthan’s Kota Division over the past three days showcased the train’s exceptional performance. On January 2, a fully loaded sleeper train hit a peak speed of 180 km/h between Kota and Laban in Bundi district. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared a video on X, highlighting the train’s stability, as seen in a static water level in a glass during its high-speed run.
Features and Benefits for Commuters
Vande Bharat sleeper trains are equipped with ultra-comfortable berths, automatic doors, onboard Wi-Fi, and aircraft-like interiors. These upgrades aim to revolutionize long-distance routes, including Delhi-Mumbai, Kashmir-Kanyakumari, and Howrah-Chennai, significantly reducing travel time and enhancing passenger convenience.

Safety and Certification Underway
The month-long trials will be supervised by RDSO, Lucknow, after which the trains will undergo evaluation by the Railway Safety Commissioner. Upon certification, Indian Railways will induct the sleeper trains for regular service, heralding a new era in Indian transportation.
Transforming Rail Travel Across India
With 136 Vande Bharat chair car trains already revolutionizing short and medium-distance routes, the sleeper trains aim to extend the same luxury and speed to longer journeys. Currently, long-distance trains like the Rajdhani Express have an average speed of 90 km/h. The Vande Bharat sleeper trains promise to nearly double that, setting new benchmarks for Indian Railways.
