Union Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated major projects worth Rs. 187 crores at Chennai Port. The new projects include a coastal road, storage godowns, and a shore power supply facility. These developments aim to improve cargo movement and reduce environmental impact at Chennai and Kamarajar Ports.
The Minister emphasized the importance of these projects for India’s trade and green initiatives. The coastal road, built at a cost of Rs. 4 crores, will ease heavy cargo movement and reduce dust pollution. The newly opened godowns, worth Rs. 73.91 crores, will store sensitive cargo like food grains. Additionally, a shore power facility was set up for coal vessels to reduce emissions.

Sonowal also inaugurated the doubling of railway lines at Kamarajar Port, funded with Rs. 88.91 crores. This expansion will double cargo handling capacity and speed up transport.
These projects are part of India’s efforts to modernize ports and build sustainable infrastructure for global trade.
