Leh marked a milestone in green energy innovation as Union Minister Shri Manohar Lal flagged off NTPC‘s Green Hydrogen buses. The event was attended by officials from the Ministry of Power, Leh Administration, and NTPC.
The Green Hydrogen Mobility Project features a 1.7 MW in-situ solar plant, a hydrogen filling station with 80 kg/day capacity, and five intra-city buses. Designed to perform in extreme conditions at 3,650m above sea level, the buses can travel 300 km on a single hydrogen fill of 25 kg.

Shri Manohar Lal traveled 12 km on one of these buses, highlighting the project’s potential to mitigate 350 MT of carbon emissions yearly, equivalent to planting 13,000 trees. The initiative also contributes 230 MT of oxygen annually to the atmosphere.
With Ladakh’s ideal solar and temperature conditions, the project promises efficient green hydrogen production, reducing fossil fuel dependence. NTPC is scaling up similar projects across India, including a hydrogen hub in Andhra Pradesh.
