Kolkata, 05th November 2024: Shyam Metalics and Energy Ltd. (SMEL) has officially commissioned a new blast furnace and sinter plant at its Jamuria facility. This development represents a significant investment of Rs. 600 crores.
The new blast furnace has a capacity of 0.77 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). It features a volume of 550 cubic meters and is equipped with modern technologies, including three top-fired stoves and coal dust injection. This enhancement aims to boost steel production by 0.77 MTPA and improve profit margins.
Mr. Brij Bhushan Agarwal, Vice Chairman & Managing Director of SMEL, highlighted the company’s commitment to growth. He stated, “The new blast furnace and sinter facility will improve India’s steel production capability.” This initiative also aims to create employment opportunities in the region.

To further enhance efficiency, the plant includes an 18 MW Top Gas Pressure Recovery Turbine (TRT). This contributes an additional 10% energy recovery. The facility also features an advanced cooling system that reduces water and power usage by about 20%. Moreover, it is designed for zero-process water discharge, aligning with the company’s growth strategy.
Alongside the blast furnace, SMEL launched a sinter plant with a capacity of 1.11 MTPA. This plant processes iron ore fines, enhancing feedstock quality for the blast furnace. The addition is expected to improve operating efficiency and lower production costs.
This brownfield expansion underscores Shyam Metalics‘ strategic focus on increasing production efficiency. With high top pressure and high-temperature hot blast technology, the facility is set to achieve greater coal injection and energy savings, supported by engineering expertise from SDM of China.
