NTPC Ltd, India’s largest energy company, has created a new catalyst to produce methanol from CO2 with help from the Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP) in Dehradun. Reducing CO2 emissions is a major challenge for coal-fired power plants, and NTPC’s project aims to capture and convert CO2 into useful fuel and chemicals.

NTPC’s R&D wing, NETRA, developed this catalyst for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. Tests show that the methanol produced by this method is over 99% pure. This innovation is part of NTPC’s larger plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions, which aligns with India’s goal of reaching net-zero by 2070. NTPC Green Energy Limited is also leading initiatives to shrink NTPC’s carbon footprint in line with global climate targets.
