NLC India Limited (NLCIL) has achieved a significant milestone with the commercial operation of the first unit of its 3 x 660 MW Ghatampur Thermal Power Plant (GTPP) in Uttar Pradesh. Developed through Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited (NUPPL), a joint venture with Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL), the plant represents NLCIL’s first foray into supercritical power generation technology.
The first unit, with a capacity of 660 MW, successfully completed its trial run on December 7, 2024, and officially began operations on December 12, 2024. This marks the commissioning of the first fossil fuel-based thermal power plant in India for the current financial year, boosting NLCIL’s total power generation capacity to 6,731 MW from 6,071 MW.
The GTPP project is a response to the increasing power demands of Uttar Pradesh and Assam, featuring supercritical technology for higher efficiency, reduced fuel consumption, and lower emissions. Advanced environmental systems, such as electrostatic precipitators and flue-gas desulfurization units, further enhance the plant’s sustainability credentials.

Shri Prasanna Kumar Motupalli, CMD of NLCIL, stated, “The successful commissioning of this plant underscores our commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability. Supercritical technology represents a leap forward in achieving India’s energy independence and reducing environmental impact.”
The collaboration between NLCIL and UPRVUNL showcases a robust partnership aimed at strengthening India’s energy infrastructure while adhering to environmental and social governance principles. As the first of three units begins operations, the remaining units are on track for future commissioning, contributing to India’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
