NHAI Tightens Highway Safety Regulations
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has issued stringent directives to ensure adherence to safety and construction standards for Metal Beam Crash Barriers (MBCBs) on national highways. These measures are designed to enhance road safety and improve project accountability.
Crash Barriers Must Meet IRC and Ministry Standards
Contractors and concessionaires are now required to install crash barriers that comply with specifications outlined by the Indian Road Congress (IRC) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The materials used must match the crash test report, and installation must follow manufacturer-provided methodologies.
Mandatory QR Codes on Crash Barriers
To improve transparency and accessibility, manufacturers must emboss product details, including brand name and batch number, on every MBCB element. Additionally, a QR code must be affixed to the barriers, enabling easy access to installation Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) on-site.

Focus on Safety and Accountability
These guidelines also emphasize ground layer compaction during installation and require manufacturers to certify that their crash barriers align with prescribed standards. Authority Engineers will verify compliance with technical specifications before approval.
Enhancing Highway Safety Nationwide
NHAI’s initiative underscores its commitment to achieving high-quality construction while prioritizing the safety of highway users. By enforcing these measures, the authority aims to improve accountability and set new benchmarks in national highway construction standards.
