India marked a significant milestone in sustainable infrastructure as Hon. Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari, inaugurated the nation’s first national highway using bio-bitumen. Developed by Praj Industries in collaboration with CSIR-CRRI, the eco-friendly road forms part of the Nagpur-Mansar Bypass on NH 44.
The innovative bio-bitumen, derived from lignin, a byproduct of agricultural waste, offers a greener alternative to conventional fossil-based bitumen. With a blending capacity of up to 15%, this technology can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 70%. Praj Industries projects that adopting this technology across India could save ₹4,000–₹4,500 crore in foreign exchange annually.
Minister Gadkari emphasized the transformative potential of bio-bitumen, stating, “Our farmers are becoming energy providers, contributing to India’s cleaner and greener future.” The success of a test road in Halol, Gujarat, which withstood over two years of use, was pivotal in bringing this innovation to the national stage.

Dr. Pramod Chaudhari, Founder Chairman of Praj Industries, highlighted the broader impact of this initiative. “This aligns with India’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and sustainable development under the ‘Make in India’ initiative,” he said.
With India’s bitumen demand rising and 50% of it being imported, this breakthrough technology addresses critical environmental and economic challenges. Praj’s efforts signal a step forward in achieving the nation’s climate and energy goals while paving the way for a self-reliant India.
