Indian Railways has entered a new phase of modernization and technological enhancement through a partnership with Switzerland. The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Switzerland’s Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, and Communications (DETEC) sets the stage for collaborative advancements in track maintenance, infrastructure, and operational improvements.
Key Points of the MoU
The MoU was signed via video conference, receiving approval from India’s Ministry of Railways and Ministry of External Affairs. Union Minister of Railways, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, emphasized the importance of this collaboration in supporting the government’s railway modernization efforts. The Swiss expertise, he noted, is expected to uplift Indian Railways’ technology, safety standards, and overall efficiency.
Federal Councilor and DETEC Head, Mr. Albert Roesti, expressed optimism, stating that Switzerland’s advanced railway technology would help streamline India’s railway operations and service quality.
Areas of Collaboration
The partnership outlines several critical areas where Switzerland’s technical prowess can support Indian Railways:
- Traction Rolling Stock
- Electric Multiple Units (EMU) and Train Sets
- Railway Electrification Equipment
- Station Modernization
- Tunneling Technology
This framework builds upon an original MoU signed in 2017, aimed at improving the efficiency and reliability of Indian Railways’ passenger and freight services.

Establishing a Working Group
To foster smooth collaboration, a Joint Working Group (JWG) was created with members from both Indian and Swiss railway sectors. The group has met three times, including the most recent meeting on October 11, 2023, where investment opportunities for Swiss companies were highlighted.
Expected Outcomes for Indian Railways
Indian Railways anticipates that this MoU will lead to substantial infrastructure enhancements, with Swiss companies providing machinery, materials, and tunneling consultancy services. This will strengthen the railway’s operational reliability and benefit both passengers and freight handlers across India.
A Step Forward for India’s Rail Modernization
The MoU signing ceremony was attended by key dignitaries, including Shri Mridul Kumar, Ambassador of India to Switzerland. This partnership aligns with India’s focus on infrastructure development and demonstrates the government’s commitment to creating a safer, faster, and more efficient railway network.
