The Government of India has announced an exciting initiative to drive forward the nation’s commitment to green energy. Through the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), proposals are now invited to set up Centres of Excellence (CoE) focused on Research and Development (R&D) in Green Hydrogen. This ambitious step, under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, was officially launched on November 4, 2024.
Supporting a Clean Energy Transition
These new Centres aim to foster world-class research and development, helping India transition to a low-carbon economy. By promoting innovation in Green Hydrogen production, storage, and usage, these Centres will enhance India’s energy independence and environmental sustainability.

Collaboration for a Greener Economy
The Centres will serve as hubs for collaboration between industries, academia, and the government. They will focus on cutting-edge research, skill development, and knowledge sharing across the Green Hydrogen value chain. These Centres will also encourage public-private partnerships, engaging research institutions, universities, and private entities to contribute proposals.
Investing in Green Hydrogen
The government has allocated ₹100 crore for establishing these Centres, marking a significant investment under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Launched in January 2023, the Mission has a total budget of ₹19,744 crore and aims to decarbonize India’s economy, reduce fossil fuel dependence, and place India at the forefront of global clean energy initiatives.
This new call for proposals demonstrates India’s commitment to becoming a global leader in Green Hydrogen and clean energy solutions.
