In a landmark achievement for India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, two state-of-the-art warships—Yard 12707 (Surat) and Yard 12651 (Nilgiri)—were delivered to the Indian Navy on December 20, 2024. Designed and constructed indigenously by the Warship Design Bureau and M/s Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), these vessels showcase India’s engineering and industrial expertise.
Surat, the fourth and final destroyer of Project 15B, is equipped with advanced missile systems and boasts a speed of over 30 knots. It marks the culmination of India’s indigenous destroyer program that began with Project 15 (1997-2001) and continued with Projects 15A and 15B. Notably, Surat is poised to become the Indian Navy’s first AI-enabled warship, enhancing its operational efficiency.
Nilgiri, the first frigate of Project 17A, represents the evolution of India’s stealth frigate design, with six more vessels under construction. With its advanced weapons, propulsion systems, and integrated construction techniques, Nilgiri is designed to tackle conventional and unconventional maritime threats.
