New Kendriya Vidyalayas to Open Across India
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the opening of 85 new Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) under the Civil/Defence sector. Additionally, the government will expand the existing KV in Shivamogga, Karnataka, by adding two extra sections in all classes. This expansion aims to cater to the growing number of Central Government employees.
The new KVs will be set up across the country, with an estimated investment of Rs. 5872.08 crore. This includes a capital expenditure of Rs. 2862.71 crore and operational costs of Rs. 3009.37 crore over the next eight years, starting from 2025-26.

As of now, there are 1,256 functional KVs, including three abroad. About 13.56 lakh students are enrolled in these schools. With the addition of 85 new KVs, approximately 82,560 students will benefit from improved education facilities. Moreover, the creation of 5,388 direct permanent jobs is expected, alongside a boost to employment for skilled and unskilled workers due to construction activities.
Kendriya Vidyalayas are known for their quality education, innovative teaching methods, and modern infrastructure. The scheme, initially started in 1962, has been crucial for the children of transferable Central Government and Defence employees. These schools are now also serving as model institutions under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, known as PM Shri Schools, for their excellence in education.
