November 11, 2024, Kolkata – Balmer Lawrie & Co. Ltd., a public sector enterprise under India’s Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, announced its entry into rail logistics through a major partnership with GATX India Pvt. Ltd., the country’s largest private railcar lessor.
The agreement, signed on November 11, 2024, covers the lease of three BFNS 22.9-ton wagons to transport finished steel from Steel Authority of India Ltd.’s (SAIL) Rourkela Steel Plant over distances exceeding 1,000 kilometers.

This move marks a key milestone in Balmer Lawrie’s logistics strategy. By utilizing rail for bulk transportation, the company aims to provide efficient and cost-effective logistics solutions. “Entering into Rail Logistics is a strategic step for Balmer Lawrie to expand domestic transportation and progress towards our vision of becoming a ₹6,000 crore company by 2030,” said Mr. Adhip Nath Palchaudhuri, Chairman and Managing Director of Balmer Lawrie. The venture, he noted, aligns with India’s National Rail Plan, which targets increasing the railways’ share in freight to 45%.
Balmer Lawrie secured the contract through a public tender, underscoring its commitment to rail logistics. The company also plans future rail transport for bulk chemicals, supporting sustainable logistics practices that reduce operational costs and carbon footprints.
