NTPC has teamed up with the Indian Army to build a Solar Hydrogen-based microgrid at Chushul, Ladakh. This project will deliver a steady power supply to off-grid Army locations using Green Hydrogen. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh officially started the project through video conference with senior NTPC and Defence officials.
This innovative microgrid will use solar energy and hydrogen for power storage, supplying 200kW of electricity all year. It aims to replace diesel generators, which are difficult to use in extreme cold at high altitudes. NTPC will oversee the system for 25 years to support soldiers in remote and tough locations.

The new system combines renewable energy with reliable battery storage, making it sustainable and reducing carbon emissions. Ladakh’s high sunlight and low temperatures make it ideal for solar energy, helping to reduce fuel needs and improve energy self-sufficiency.
NTPC is also testing hydrogen-powered buses in Leh and plans more green projects to reach its renewable energy goals by 2032.
