Mahindra Opens Two Advanced Labs for Safety and Battery Research in Tamil Nadu

Mahindra Inaugurates Passive Safety Lab and Battery & Cell Research Lab in Kanchipuram

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. has opened two state-of-the-art facilities in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu. These facilities are the Passive Safety Lab (PSL) and the Battery & Cell Research Lab. They mark a significant step towards enhancing automotive safety and advancing battery technology for electric vehicles.

Cutting-Edge Safety Testing Facility

The Passive Safety Lab (PSL) is one of the largest of its kind in the world, spanning over 25,000 square meters. This facility allows engineers to test the safety of vehicles in various conditions, including side and frontal impacts, pole crashes, and rear impacts. It meets global safety standards such as Bharat NCAP, Euro NCAP, and Australian NCAP.

The lab is equipped with high-speed cameras, advanced lighting systems, and crash dummies to ensure comprehensive and accurate testing. Mahindra aims to use these tests to enhance the safety of their SUVs, making them among the safest vehicles on the road.

Battery & Cell Research Lab for EVs

The Battery & Cell Research Lab, spread over 1,374 square meters, focuses on advancing battery technology. It is equipped with high-end tools such as scanning electron microscopes and X-ray systems to analyze battery cells. The facility will help develop battery packs that offer better energy efficiency, faster charging times, and longer life.

This lab is crucial in Mahindra’s mission to create clean mobility solutions. Engineers will work on both destructive and non-destructive tests, aiming to improve the safety and performance of batteries used in electric vehicles (EVs).

Importance of the New Facilities

These labs are part of Mahindra’s larger investment in research and development, aimed at producing safer and more efficient vehicles. The facilities are just 55 kilometers from the Mahindra Research Valley (MRV), where the company develops its SUVs.

Inaugurated by Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Industries, Dr. T.R.B. Rajaa, the new labs reinforce the state’s position as a global hub for automotive research and development. Mahindra’s President of Automotive Technology, Mr. Velusamy R., emphasized that these labs will play a vital role in delivering world-class SUVs that are both safe and sustainable.

With the launch of the Passive Safety Lab and the Battery & Cell Research Lab, Mahindra is solidifying its commitment to innovation in safety and clean mobility. These facilities will not only benefit the company but also contribute to making Tamil Nadu a leader in automotive technology.
