The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has taken a significant step in enhancing India’s naval capabilities by signing two crucial contracts worth approximately ₹2,867 crore. The agreements were finalized in New Delhi on December 30, 2024, in the presence of Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh.
The first contract, valued at ₹1,990 crore, was inked with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai. This deal focuses on constructing and integrating an Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) Plug, developed indigenously by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The AIP system will significantly enhance the endurance of conventional submarines, advancing India’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative while generating nearly three lakh man-days of employment.

Additionally, a ₹877 crore contract was signed with Naval Group, France, for integrating an Electronic Heavy Weight Torpedo (EHWT) into the Indian Navy’s Kalvari-Class submarines. This collaboration between the Indian Navy, DRDO, and Naval Group will bolster the firepower capabilities of these submarines, ensuring enhanced operational readiness.
Both initiatives underscore India’s focus on indigenous defense technology and international partnerships to strengthen maritime security.
