Indian Light Tank achieves major milestone with accurate firing in high-altitude trials
The Indian Light Tank (ILT) has marked a significant achievement by successfully firing rounds with precision at an altitude exceeding 4200m. These trials, conducted at a high-altitude location, demonstrated the tank’s accuracy across varied ranges. This follows Phase I trials completed in the desert environment in September 2024.
The ILT is a 25-ton class armored fighting vehicle designed for high-altitude military operations. Developed by the Chennai-based Combat Vehicles Research & Development Establishment (CVRDE) of DRDO and manufactured by industry partner Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Precision Engineering, the tank meets the Indian Army’s specific operational requirements.

In addition to firing trials, the Indian Air Force successfully demonstrated the ILT’s airlift capability, ensuring rapid deployment in remote and inaccessible areas. This integrated development, from design to demonstration, was accomplished within just three years.
Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh and DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V Kamat lauded the DRDO, Indian Army, Indian Air Force, and L&T for this landmark achievement. Following the successful internal trials, the ILT will undergo further testing before proceeding to user trials.
